Dance With my Father

(song by Luther Vandross)

Those who knew my father would immediately remember his dancing. He was a very good dancer, loved dancing so much and I believed that it was the first thing he taught me --- how to dance.

I have hundreds of memories when I danced with my father since I was a child. He was so proud of me. He even came to school (which was quite rare) just to see me danced. He told me that I was the best dancer of them all. That comment made me so happy and I can still remember his face expressing how proud he was of me ---not only for being his daughter, but for being his dance student.

He taught his kids how to dance whenever there was a chance. And when we became tired in the night, I would play asleep so that he would carry me up the stairs to my room and tucked me in –--I knew then for sure I was loved.

I lost my father ten years now. I was with him until the very moment he died. I loved him so much. But the pain was more unbearable to see my mother cried for the man she loved.

This song of “Dance with my Father” is very significant for me. The song is about family, love and loss of a father. It would take you down the
memory lane. If you haven’t heard the song, it is so worth listening to and if
you have heard it, please listen to its lyrics. I hope the song would touch your heart and soul as it did
mine.

Let me share some of the lyrics of the song ---

"If I could steal one final
glance, one final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again"

Every time I dance, I always feel like doing it again with the very first man I danced with. And whenever someone ask me “who taught you how to dance?”, I only have one answer— "my father".
